CAROLINE MURRAY – VOLUNTEER

I was born in Australia and brought up in England, in the suburbs of London. My resultant Australian passport very handily made it easy for me to move to rural New Zealand 8 years ago, to do some interesting large animal work, after 6 years of mainly small animal practice around the Uk.

Since 2003 I have been working between the north and south island of New Zealand, doing small/mixed/large animal work. This has been frequently interspersed with exciting overseas travel and volunteer vet trips, including: the 1100 mile Iditarod sled dog race in the Alaskan wilderness, neutering street dogs in a remote village in the Indian Himalayas, working in a Cameroonian orphaned primate sanctuary, watching endangered leatherback turtles laying eggs on a secluded West African island beach, and helping take care of elephants injured by landmines in Thailand.

From November 2011 to January 2012 I volunteered at the LSPCA, working mainly with the head vet Richard Ssuna. I have had an brilliant time working with a variety of animals, including dogs, cats, monkeys, duikers and even tortoises! I also managed a brief excursion to the beautiful Lake Malawi and an amazing safari in Zambia.

I have greatly enjoyed volunteering at the LSPCA, and would thoroughly recommend it. Malawi is a very friendly country and offers a wealth of fascinating experiences.
