Dog population in Lilongwe is a very important factor in improving of their well-being. The incidence of rabies does not only impact negatively on the dogs through bad publicity but also directly affects the rabid dog. Through the various activities, the LSPCA aspires to a more controlled dog population in the City to reduce the chance of unwanted animals on the streets that increase the likelihood of maintaining rabies in the stray dog population. Besides the rabies vaccination, the spay clinics and education and community awareness programmes, we continue to engage the City Administration to enforce the City Bylaw on Animal Control.
However this requires investment as there is neither infrastructure nor trained personnel to enforce the law. In addition to these, there is a clear lack of system to monitor animals in Lilongwe. We are engaging the City now to establish a dog pound and invest some funds to establish an animal unit in Lilongwe.
The LSPCA is also looking at using a capture sterilize and release technic as a dog population management tool. Two dart guns were acquired from RSPCA International for this work.
