Since her inception, Education has been at the forefront of the Trust’s agenda. Humane education is run in all the public schools in Lilongwe with the full support of the District Education Department. Pupils ranging between the ages of 10-14 are given talks on various facets of animal care. All common domestic animals’ needs are addressed through the three thematic presentations that our education officer makes.
In addition to instilling compassion and care of animals in the children, we tackle the dangers of rabies and the routes of infection and how this can be averted through appropriate handling of animals.
This programme is run at the school in conjunction with the club Patron who is often appointed by the head teacher. As aforementioned, the education officer runs three classes on three separate days to accord the kids time to comprehend the “new” animal welfare concept.
All the schools visited are provided with two posters about the basic care of companion and domestic animals for the classroom and the staff room as a constant reminder to them. A select group of kids are invited to the LSPCA Secretariat to further improve on their knowledge and some kids’ interactive games. We are looking at strategically appointing some of these as community animal welfare monitors.
Volunteers can help by participating in the talks and help share experiences from their distant homes with the children. Education at search an early age serves to increase the love and compassion towards animals. This is designed to address their conscious towards being responsible and caring for the well-being of both animals in their care or in the community
