Providing Training Platform for College Students.

VEtsUnited January

The Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (LSPCA) continues to deliver unique practical skills platform to students of Veterinary medicine.

Last Friday the 11th of January 2019, LSPCA under the VETS UNITED program organized a Vet Clinic in Chigonthi Extension Planning Area (EPA) in Lilongwe to train the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR)-Bunda students on domestic animal health and care.

The training focused on how to perform physical examination of a donkey, and how to measure and provide collect medication to sick Donkeys. Under the supervision of LSPCA Veterinarian, the students managed to deworm, trim off hoofs, and attended to the wounds of donkeys.

The training gave these Bunda students an opportunity to put into practice the skills they had learned in class.

According to LSPCA veterinarian who is also Vets United Programme coordinator for Bunda College Dr Catherine said “there is a great need of skilled Veterinarians in Malawi as there is a currently dire shortage of skilled veterinarians and the growing need for good animal welfare and care.

LSPCA’s VETS UNITED training programme has been designed alongside the college curriculum to enable students to put into practice the theories that they have learnt in class. Often times, students in colleges are exposed to more theories than practical’s due to lack of enough equipment in their schools.

Through LSPCA’S VET UNITED training, upcoming Malawian Vets will be simulated to a real-life working environment of a veterinarian providing veterinary care to farmers and animal owners in Malawi.

Lecturers and students alike have welcomed this development and urges more organization in Malawi to work with the academia institutions.
