Location: Lilongwe, Malawi
Type of Work: 70% Small Animal, 20% Farm Animals and 10% Wildlife
Lilongwe SPCA is the only animal welfare organisation in Malawi and works to improve the welfare of domestic and farm animals. Our mobile veterinary clinics operate in the poorest communities around Lilongwe and provide free veterinary care, including a rabies vaccination and spay/neuter services.
The veterinary service has now been expanded through the opening a veterinary clinic. The clinic provides a high standard of veterinary care for mainly small animals, and the advert is to fill the position of this veterinary clinic manager, who will also be part of the LSPCA team which runs the mobile clinic.
The successful applicant will be responsible to further develop the clinic into a charitable community clinic with a viable commercially competitive public service.
The SPCA also runs a small quarantine facility for stray and abandoned dogs and cats. The position requires managing the quarantine and all the animals fostered out or rehomed through the organisation.
The successful applicant will also be involved in the SPCA’s advisory work with local councils and governmental agencies on animal welfare legislation and stray animal management policies.
LSPCA is looking for an experienced veterinarian with at least 3 years post-qualification and 2 years’ experience in an established busy veterinary facility. This is a new undertaking at the organisation, geared towards establishing the Trust as a viable, self-sustaining programme, so the applicants’ enthusiasm and flexibility will play an important part in this exciting and important venture.
The position is based in the capital, Lilongwe, with regular visits to other regions and more remote parts of the country for outreach clinics. The position is full time, 6 days a week and after hours work will sometimes be required. The successful applicant will enjoy a challenging and stimulating work place, with opportunities for both personal and professional growth and development, with a large portion of the work aimed at the capacity building of local staff. It is an excellent opportunity to work in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural developing country and explore the beautiful “warm heart of Africa”.
Qualifications and experience:
Veterinary degree, practice experience, management and accounts experience. High standard verbal and written English. Appreciable experience of working in a developing country,
preferably in Africa, or past SPCA or similar employment. Fundraising experience is also highly desirable.
Remuneration:
Lilongwe SPCA is a non-profit organization and is therefore unable to offer a competitive international salary package. However, the remuneration package offered is within the high income bracket for Malawi. Accommodation will be provided as well as the use of the SPCA vehicle after hours for reasonable personal use. Salary will be revised depending on profits realised in the first year of operations. The package will also include four weeks paid annual leave, medical insurance, and return flights home (where applicable). Depending upon arrangements reached with the successful candidate, a contract for up to 2 years is available.
