Rabies Vaccination Programme

Rabies is still very rife in sub Saharan Africa and Malawi is no exception. The government spends millions annually in the fight against rabies through various post exposure inoculations to all dog bite victims. In Lilongwe it is believe that wildlife like hyenas and the ever growing stray dog population has sustained rabies in the animal populace.

In support of this anti-rabies government effort, LSPCA annually conducts joint rabies vaccination campaigns in the City with the City Assembly of Lilongwe and the Ministry of Agriculture. These vaccinations are carried in the second half of the year. For this LSPCA greatly relies on volunteers that help in the vaccination of over 12,000 dogs in ten days.

Volunteers are needed for crowd control, registration, vaccination (trained) and help in talking to the people about animal care, feeding, housing and possibly confiscation of animals. The campaign is usually run for two weeks with four vaccination points every day. We issue vaccination certificates and treat the animals for any diseases.

LSPCA strongly supports animal vaccination and identification to deter the use of indiscriminate employment of undesirable methods of dog culling in the aftermath of the vaccination. We issues vaccination certificates and other body markers, to protect those individuals from the indiscriminate use of live ammunitions in do population control through shooting all roaming dogs. Fortunately the LSPCA has so far managed to persuade the authorities to stop this ineffective method.
