Meet Isiaha, the first Young Ambassador for Rabies in Malawi.

Ambassador

We are very proud to introduce Isiaha Mzonda, 13 years old and our first Young Ambassador for Rabies in Malawi.

We met Isiaha at a rabies vaccination clinic in Salima in April 2018. Isiaha was bitten by his puppy and asked the vet team for help as his puppy started acting strangely a few days after the bite.  He thought his puppy was sick and could receive vet care to make it better. The vet team suspected rabies and the Central Veterinary Laboratory in Lilongwe later confirmed that his puppy had tested positive for rabies.

Isiaha didn’t know anything about rabies then, let alone what to do after a dog bite. His parents took him to the Salima District Hospital for immediate post exposure vaccine and follow up treatment plans were put in place.  Today, things have changed, Isiaha now knows what to do when a dog bites someone and where to go for help with vaccinations, both for dogs and people. He happily tells his story!

Since many children like Isiaha like to play with dogs and other pets, they are at risk of being bitten or licked by a dog or cat carrying the deadly virus. Isiaha now teaches his fellow classmates and friends about rabies and encourages them to vaccinate their dogs against rabies. Isiaha wishes to see that children in Malawi are well informed about rabies.

Many thanks to everyone who took time off their busy schedule to make sure that Isaiah received the necessary treatment when he got bitten. Together we can end rabies and make this world a better place for both humans and animals.
