NGO accredits 6 firms over dog welfare

Lilongwe society for the Protection and Care of Animals (LSPCA) has accredited six institutions to operate with working dogs following their adherence to animal welfare guidelines.

The Malawi Police Services (MPS), G4S, Quick Reaction Security, Gardaworld, Protelligent, and Wildlife Detection Dog Unit received the recognition in Lilongwe as part of the association’s stamp of approval programme.

The programme, which started this year, seeks to recognise organizations that adhere to the animal welfare guidelines which were launched by the government in 2019, according to the association’s chief executive officer Eveline Sibindi Van Dam.

She said: “the dogs that work for these institutions enjoy animal freedoms and we need to recognize this. We strongly encourage all organizations and individuals that hire the services of working dogs to exclusively hire organizations that have received the stamp of approval.”

MPS officer-in-charge for the dogs section, Christopher Nalima, said they put the welfare of the dogs at the centre of their operations. He said this enhances their performance. “We use the dogs to sniff drugs and explosives. They are very much a significant stake in our work. We are honoured to be recognised,” Nalima said.

Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development deputy director Julius Chulu has warned that in future, only institutions with the seal of approval will be allowed to keep dogs for security businesses. The guidelines spell out five rights for animals, namely freedom from fear and distress, hunger and thirst, pain, injury, and diseases.
