A healthy donkey, a win for all.

Hoof care week 2022

Animal health should be in check at all times. A healthy donkey has a long lifespan. The LSPCA’s Center for Animal Welfare understands the need for quality veterinary services and conducts periodic veterinary clinics in rural areas.

In honouring this year’s International hoof Care Week, the LSPCA, with support from the Donkey Sanctuary-UK, gave free farrier service to donkeys, treated donkeys from general ailments, and offered free farrier training to donkey owners in Linthipe-Dedza.

International Hoof-Care week is a week of action dedicated to caring for hoofed animals. Donkey hooves left unchecked and uncared for can cause severe pain and even lameness in donkeys. Protecting and strengthening donkey hooves helps avoid additional health issues, discomfort, pain in donkeys, and potential long-term implications.

The 2022 hoof-care week celebrated from 25th to 30th of January attracted about 100 donkeys queuing for hoof trimming service and general treatment.

Donkeys are of significant importance to many people in rural areas here in Malawi, where they transport goods, which makes it possible for impoverished families to earn a living.
